History - Tradition - Pride
When 16-year-old Giuseppe Clarizio arrived from Italy in 1922, he had less than $100 in his pocket, he didn't speak a word of english and he didn't have a job. He landed at Ellis Island in New York and immediately left the eastern cold for southern California. With the help of Vito Nicassio, a distant cousin, he got a job in a packing house in Vernon. He was introduced to Mary Carno by mutual friends, liked how she looked and married her shortly thereafter. At first he lived with his in-laws in Boyle Heights where all of his three children were born. He was a tireless worker and he eventually saved enough to purchase a small house in Gardena. The young family scrimped and saved until they were able to buy a larger house in Alhambra.
The Grandpa Claro (Clarizio was shortened to Claro when they arrived in the US) jumped at the chance to trade his home for a small retail grocery store and meat market in San Gabriel when the owner wanted to retire. There was no money involved, just a stright trade of property. The year was 1940, before the war. The family lived in a small house in the back of the store.
The meat market served the community during WWII until his son Frank and his new bride Geraldine decided to buy it in 1948 just before their high school graduation. They sold $18 worth of groceries on their first day and Claro's was on its way!
